AITA for using the “guest soap” and starting what feels like a bathroom cold war?
My wife (30F) recently bought this super fancy soap from some artsy little shop. It came in a tiny glass bottle, wrapped in twine, with one of those over-the-top labels describing the scent in poetic nonsense. Think: pine, nostalgia, and disappointment. She put it on the bathroom counter and told me very clearly, “This is only for guests.”
Here’s the thing—we almost never have guests. Maybe every couple of months, if that. I pointed that out, but apparently the idea that someone might see regular store-brand soap is a nightmare scenario for her. So this bottle just sat there like some kind of sacred relic.
Anyway, the other day I ran out of my usual cheap soap. You know, the kind in a beat-up plastic bottle that barely pumps anymore. I needed to wash my hands, so I used one pump of the fancy stuff. Just one. She happened to walk in mid-pump and looked at me like I’d just desecrated something holy.
She told me I was wasting it and that it wasn’t meant for “everyday use.” I thought that was ridiculous. So I decided to play along—but on my terms. I went out and bought my own expensive soap. Something citrusy and woodsy. Not cheap. I set it up proudly on my side of the sink and told her this was my exclusive soap.
Next thing I know, she’s browsing online for even more high-end soap options. It’s turned into a quiet war—two opposing soap empires in one bathroom. I joked that we should actually invite people over just so someone finally uses all this soap.
Now she’s annoyed, says I’m being childish and making fun of her. I told her she created the soap hierarchy, and I just didn’t want to be at the bottom of it. She hasn’t really spoken to me since. But I smell great.
So yeah, AITA?
