Why couldn't Kurapika go and check to see if Majtani was still alive?

When Leorio wants to start his fight, Leroute tells him they can't since the last fight hasn't officially ended yet. Majtani needs to either forfeit the match, or be killed by Kurapika. Yet despite this, the bridge on Kurapika's side retracts, meaning he can't go over to continue the fight even if he wanted to, and Leroute starts her little betting game.

Does Leroute have the power to end the Kurapika vs Majtani round whenever she feels like it?... If Kurapika had stopped being so stubborn and said he would continue the fight, would the bridge have reconnected to the fighting ring?
