What is your relationship like with your partners family? What is your personal philosophy on maintaining a healthy relationship with your partner if you do not have a healthy relationship with their family?

I have a terrible relationship with my partner’s family due to some horribly deeply rooted issues their family has. This resulted in personal attacks physically and verbally upon me (and among them). Out of respect, I have never retaliated. However, I’m expected to continue being the bigger person and “turn the other cheek” year after year. Just trying to see if removing myself from the situation and avoiding gatherings is an outlandish approach to keeping my personal peace. No I didn’t do anything, they treat each other like this.
