AIO over what a former colleague will say or think of me after sharing a negative experience with former coworker?

💼work/career

I switched to a different organization in my company for a few reasons including wanting to learn more, but one of them was a colleague that was never friendly with me and would wait until the end of the year to leave me feedback that was slightly critical, but things that could have also been discussed and fixed on the spot.

By the second year, I worked to make sure I left a good impression on that colleague, and constantly tried to help them in any way I could. At the end of the year, their feedback wasn’t critical, but seemed to display that unfriendliness that I was sensing for the past two years.

A few months after making the switch to another organization in the company, I was talking to a different former colleague (who was in a higher position than me and on the same former team), and I shared my experiences with that person I mentioned and their feedback. I didn’t say anything bad about them, just what I perceived happened from my end. While the message was meant for the person I was talking to, his wife jumped in and said it was my ‘ego’ that made me take that former coworker’s feedback that way. I don’t really know their spouse well, but I accepted what they said and moved on from the conversation.

I’ve been having an uncomfortable feeling where I regret sharing anything that isn’t positive with my former coworker. The previous team I was on always had a culture of being really positive, and it felt like I had to mask things that I didn’t agree with and try to put a positive spin on all of what I’d say. This interaction brought back those feelings, and now I’m worried that I made a mistake of over sharing (even though I thought it might be a good sign to open up to someone else). Am I overreacting, or should I try to keep my experiences to myself next time?
