Enhanced DL “has no picture”

Passenger [Question/Post]

About an hour ago, the TSA scanner decided that my (recently renewed, Michigan Enhanced, RealID-compliant) license didn’t have a picture on it at all - despite the fact that, as the TSA agent said, “It quite clearly has a picture on it.” We (the TSA agent and I) waited for a supervisor for about ten minutes until I got tired of waiting and asked if she could just use my passport. (I had brought it with me today just in case, with the new ID and the RealID situation in general.) She said sure, I dug it out, I went through.

The new Michigan Enhanced DL has a different format, including what appears to be laser-cut letters/numbers (my initials and the last two digits of my birth year) cut into the plastic over part of the picture. I’m wondering if that’s why the scanner can’t read the picture?

I’ll try it again on the way home. I fly (domestically) almost every week; I don’t love the idea of carrying my passport if i don’t really need it.
