Help with armor upgrades

I'm very new to the game, only around level 40, still in the first island. Better armours keep coming as I progress and I try to see the stats and choose whichever is best but that's a lot of work, so was wondering is there a good set of armour you get in early game that you can use for a long period of time? and what armour should you upgrade to after that?
