When the boringly named "MENTOR" program was announced, I wasn't paying much attention to it, until a friend called me for a meeting. One particular evening, I attended a brief meeting and the more I heard the offer the more incredulous I became.

So the program is such that a student is matched with a benefactor who is also a mentor. The student has weekly calls with the mentor and eventually they get to meet the mentor in charge in person as well. It seemed like a standard program until the actual modalities came into play.

All the mentors are located in Europe and USA. My school is located in... rural India. Yes, it's a famous university in this corner of the country, but still, it's most certainly not an institute of renown. So it's curious that this is a chosen place.

More curiosity. All the mentors were men. Old, Rich, White, Powerful. And my school? you guessed it right - A women's only college. Somehow, this didn't raise any objections or maybe even they did and were quickly quelled.

I could quit college, move to the States and work as his personal assistant. It would be the fastest way for me to learn things. He was upfront that it was more than just a job offer, but the choice was mine. If I accepted, I could fly out next week, in business class... to NYC.. and live in a mansion... and closely watch and learn from a business magnate.

I said yes right then and there, during the call.
