I'm a Foreigner who will be (Briefly) working in Newport Wales. How can I do this safely?

I recently accepted a job that will put me in Newport, Wales for six months as part of their training program. I hear eastern wales can be pretty rough in terms of crime and things like that. The job is also about a half-hour drive from both Bristol, and Cardiff so I'm just looking for advice from people who've been there for a while on what a good place would be to (TEMPORARILY) move to.

For transportation, I plan on driving. I've just done some basic searching regarding costs for flats and things like that. Idgaf about shops or schools as long as I'm not living in a food desert where I have to drive 30km to the nearest supermarket.
