Which way do I turn my truss rod?

I just got a new bass yesterday for my birthday/graduation. It has a wheel at the bottom of the neck to adjust the truss rod, which is super easy… But I can’t figure out exactly which way to turn it, and the videos I’ve been watching on YouTube (I’ve watched several now) haven’t helped much, because the diagrams or examples they use don’t match my exact problem. Basically, the string height at the first fret is fine, but it progressively gets higher off the neck as you get closer to the body. It doesn’t get closer again at the 20th fret, however. I tried simply adjusting the saddles which just led to a lot of clacking. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you :)
