Case study: The impact of a new semiconductor manufacturing process on the industry.
Has anyone else been following the case studies analyzing the impact of novel semiconductor manufacturing processes? Specifically, I'm thinking about what happens when a new process, say moving to a smaller node or employing a new material, drastically alters either performance or cost. We often see initial hype, than a period of adjustment as the industry adapts.
Its interesting how one company implementing a breakthrough process can shift the entire landscape. Remember when everyone was scrambling to adopt immersion lithography? or the rush to FinFET? Suddenly, companies without the resources to quickly adapt risked falling behind. It seems like these inflection points are less about one specific chip and more about the domino effect on everything from design tools to supply chains.
What are your thoughts on the long-term consequences? Does improved efficiency always translate to lower prices for the consumer, or does it mainly benefit the manufacturing companies? Also, are there any ancient examples where a promising new process ultimately fizzled out despite initial excitement? I'm curious to hear people's insights.
