Rhythm practice all strings muted

A friend suggested trying to learn strumming patterns with the strings muted. Have you tried this?

Next baby step is same strumming pattern with one chord, no changes. Then add a second chord.

Mostly I see suggestions here about metronome. Which is fine but some people might benefit from alternatives.
