Internship won't let me see or edit their code?

So I managed, somehow, to land a remote software engineer internship. But the thing is, they won't allow us to see or edit their code at all. The internship is comprised of 5 mini personal projects instead, that we'll be working on with other interns, and I just wanted to see if this was normal. Anyone else have an internship like this? I'm afraid I'll miss out on gaining knowledge of how real life big applications work.
