Unpopular opinion(?): I think Dressrosa is the very peak One Piece arc
People like to say Enies Lobby is the peak but I disagree. I say this because a lot of people like to draw Dressrosa arc as a parallel to Alabasta arc and both arcs were known for being very high stakes arc in a very grand way.
-
Both take place in massive cities
-
Both involve a very formiddable villain and all Strawhats being involved in a fight
-
Both involve fighting to save the entire city and installing new rulers
I personally just love this kind of stories since it is really as grand scheme as One Piece can possibly get. But unlike Alabasta where the fights mostly happened underground, Dressrosa arc was the very very first time the Strawhats are shown fighting in public, in full view of the entire world. The entire city this time got to witness the SHs in action and Luffy pummeling Doflamingo to the dirt finally. In comparison, Alabasta was pretty mum since nobody knew what was going on aside from the royal family.
I also loved how Doflamingo is as a villain. He could very well be the most evil villain ever in OP. He practically forced the king to kill his own people, then manipulated the entire city into thinking he's the hero whilst also destroying everyone within by disappearing their loved ones. That's as fucking evil as one can get in a very diplomatic sense, without the shallow torture and gore that writers often use to otherwise write a villain.
And the grand finale in the city waking up to Doflamingo's lies and Luffy punching Doflamingo to the ground was so satisfying. It felt far more satisfying than the Wano arc too, since the Wano arc took place msotly in that stupid floating skull island whereas Dressrosa arc involved the entire freaking city screaming as they were slowly being caged to death.
