I-485 parent interview
Since there aren’t many posts here about USC who petitioned their parents that already lived in the US, I wanted to share my family’s experience. I apologize as I do not have the exact dates, but the months are correct. FO is Irving/Dallas. I petitioned for both on the same day, and all their updates/appointments have been together. I-130 and I-485 were filed together.
Our timeline was:
- packet submitted and received August 2024
- biometrics 2 weeks after packet was received
- work permits approved the day after the appointment
- I-130 approved March 2025
- interview notice received April 2025
- I-485 interview May 2025
Prior to receiving the interview notice, we had been hoping it would be waived like for many others. However, the interview itself was fairly simple. My parents were called in together and I went with them, even though the interview notice now says it’s not necessary.
The officer had us swear under oath, then started the questions. She had my parents confirm their names and DOB. She asked my mom when they got married. She asked them where was their point of entry, had they been in the US the entire time since then, and then asked the usual questions from the I-485 form (have you committed crimes, been associated with rebel groups, etc.).
We were there for roughly 20 minutes, and that’s including the time it took her computer to unfreeze lol. The officer was very friendly and helped put us at ease. She did not hand us the paper with the check boxes that say you’ve been approved, we need more information, or a decision cannot be made at this time. So I took that to be a good sign. The day after the interview they received notice that their case had been approved! Now we are just waiting for the cards to be produced and mailed!
My family’s journey has finally concluded! Feel free to ask me any questions.
