Should I hike the Inca Trail before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro?

Question

Hi everyone!

I’m 24 and looking to challenge myself next year by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with my boyfriend. I currently walk about 15,000 steps a day, but aside from that, I don’t do much physical activity or training. I’m generally healthy and slim, though I do have low iron levels (something I’m working on improving).

My boyfriend did the 3-day Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu earlier this year and said it was pretty tough, especially with the altitude. I didn’t join him on that trip, but it made me start thinking—should I try to do the Inca Trail hike first as a kind of "training" experience before attempting Kilimanjaro’s 8-day Lemosho route?

Would love to hear from anyone who’s done one or both hikes. Would doing Machu Picchu first help me mentally and physically prepare, or should I just start training for Kilimanjaro directly?

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you’re willing to share!
