Fellow grad student talking behind my back to PI
Hey everybody,
So my lab mate (another fellow grad student) had a meeting with my PI and another coworker which they discussed teaching the new undergrads basic lab stuff (making plates, agar, etc). She brought up that she does not trust me to teach anyone anything because I will probably mess it up or teach them wrong. I've been in this lab for a year and a half now, and she brought up an incident that happened when I had just started - such as not knowing about the two stop on the pipette because no one had ever taught me. Another thing she brought up was me not closing properly the PCR tubes when I definitely know I do, and I'm not the only one that uses that. In addition, she said she didn't let me help with her experiment (not even labeling tubes) because she doesn't trust me.
My other coworker told me all of that - and my lab mate never brought up to me where she thinks I'm lacking. In addition, my PI is almost never in the lab, I was always handed a protocol and never properly taught all the steps to do experiments - I had to figure out by myself, for example, because people would omit important things that is only on their lab notebooks but never put on the actual protocol. Currently my PI trusts me enough to troubleshoot and do all my experiments on my own, but apparently she doesn't say anything when someone is saying I don't do stuff properly.
I'm feeling quite upset because I thought I was actually growing as a scientist, and I know I am, but this environment is very toxic under the surface. She has a lot more experience than me so I used to think of her as someone I could come up and ask for help but knowing this I know I'd be judged.
Does anyone have any similar stories and how they dealt with it? I assume I can't mention it directly since it was a 1 on 1 meeting between them and I don't want my other coworker to come out bad because she told me.
