I Jumpstart maternity leave early due to work negligence, did i make the right decision?

Parental Leave/Work

Im so sorry if this isnt the sub for this.

I've been at my work place for 2.5 years now. It's a store, im in the bakery department. For the past year I've put up with a lot. Working the shifts of 3 people when those call in or the manager of the day just doesn't care enough to make sure others do their work.

But today, I hit my limit. I am currently 9months pregnant and in prodomal labor. Working full time, most of my shifts, alone. Other departments are normally offered help but never bakery due to the bad name given to us because of my coworker who has worked there for 20+ years. People stay out of bakery.

I bring that up because today I get into work, no one is there doing the opening shift. Meaning there is loads and loads of bread, donuts, etc sitting around waiting for me. While the opener is here, she just isn't working im bakery. Doesn't make sense.

I also see that the closers have done absolutely nothing and that means that cleanup and prep is falling on me as well.

Im already fuming but trying to remain professional. The bread machine is broken, the counter is forming two lines of people waiting for stuff. Im getting cake orders on the phone.

I call for help, for two hours. Two freaking hours. From 9 am. It finally arrives at 11:32 am. It's the manager.

In this time you have people who have their own jobs to do offer me help when they can and call the living hell out of the managers.

Turns out they were in a meeting. He took the opener of bakery and put her in deli because the deli opener called in. However there was one very experienced worker in deli already so it was not necessary to do that and leave bakery a mess.

So in the midst of all of this I called hr and said what happened and asked them to start my maternity leave. I am going to be returning to work a week earlier than I expected unless i extended with unpaid leave. But all together they understood and agreed, im now headed home wondering if I did the right thing.
