Should CEDH exist? (unique perspective)
Hey everybody! I want to first say that this is in no way a hate piece or a drama post. This is a unique point of view I wanted to share as someone who does magic content full-time.
Should Cedh exist? I have a yes or no answer but I wanted to provide context as to why.
Commander began as a way for judges to pull the draft chaff off the sides of the table , put them under the colors of the original 5 legendary elder dragons. Hence Elder Dragon highlander.
Then Shelden Menery, a friend I miss dearly, formed rules such as life totals, the command zone, the name commander and more.
Then wizards of the coast worked with Shelden to package the idea and they began make NEW CARDS and NEW LEGENDARY creatures for the format. Soon they have us ur-dragon / atraxa and much more.
Then, COVID hit and commanders popularity sky rocketed and it became the main way to play magic. As a result WOTC printed powerful commander centric cards directly into the format via new pre-cons / commander legends and even in normal products meant for standard.
As a result of its popularity and the invention of Dockside , thassa's, underworld breach, jewels lotus and many other powerful cards, many found themselves exploring CEDH either an accident or on purpose and our format grew to a size where it was officially recognized!!
BUT many believe cards like dockside / thassas / mana crypt / underworld breach / jewels lotus and many more cars... Should have never been printed. And a vast majority of MTG players, you know the people that don't know what an LGS is and get stuff from Walmart, Amazon, the casual player do not like powerful cards. To them, it ruins the game, makes it annoying and hurts feelings.
We in this subreddit ARE VERY MUCH in the know. But if you take a powerful card into any casual zone you will hurt feelings.
So a majority of the community, for a very long time, has seen what we play as a design mistake or at best unreasonable and with no point.
The same can be said for a V12 engine (a very large car engine) ... Loud / horrible for the environment/ Impractical / horrible milage.... BUT HOLY FUCK is it fun. And it's great when it's kept on a drag race track!
Should a V12 exist? No, but it does and it's fun as a fuck.
Should Cedh exist? No! But it's fun as fuck
I would never give up this format or my car for anything.
So I think accepting this format in essence "shouldn't exist" in the same way LOUD V12 race cars "shouldn't exist" is a healthy way to explain it to others that don't get it, instead of trying to get into the weeds and technicalities.
We will be disturb the other formats / brackets players if we aren't on the racetrack, a V12 engine will rattle the glass of a Prius when it goes by. So we need to do our best to be respectful.
I hope this helped and or opened your eyes to the nuances of this topic.
I explore the idea in depth in a video! I also give some personal examples for those who would like

TL;DR >!No, CEDH shouldn't exist in the same a v12 racecar engine shouldn't. The fact is it does and it's fun as fuck, I don't care if what we play is built in cards with design "mistakes" it's fun and not for everyone!<
