Admission practices aren't as transparent as you think

I think some people are being naive on this subreddit tbh. There's been plenty of people who believe universities dgaf at all about summer courses/private school courses or extreme grade inflation, and I don't think that's necessarily true. We have to understand that universities are very rarely transparent, and their websites lie/are outdated a lot of the time.

We have to realize that universities aren't stupid and that detached from reality. Everyone in Ontario knows that online courses are easier. Everyone knows that private school courses are easier. Everyone knows grade inflation exist. If you genuinely think admission officers, who have a career of deciding who is the best applicant to get into their programs, don't know or care about these very obvious flaws in the Canadian system, you're naive. Of course they do.

Just because a university doesn't outright give an adjustment factor like Waterloo doesn't mean they treat a 99 from anywhere the same. Just because they don't say anything about repeat courses or summer/online courses doesn't mean they don't care. Hell, sometimes, even if they say they don't care on their website, they do; it's not uncommon for universities to just lie on their websites. Waterloo says low to mid 90s is competitive for soft eng (spoiler alert: it's not) on their website.

This is a lot more common in the US as well, where really no one trusts exactly what the universities say in public. All universities in the US say race isn't a factor, but everyone knows that's not true, even after the supreme court ruling. Universities also obviously deny that you can get in very easily if you just donate a ton of money, but that's also obviously not true.

Universities lie. They aren't transparent. That doesn't mean you shouldn't trust the universities and what they say are important/don't matter, but it means you should still at least be a little skeptical and keep in the mind the fact that they might.
