The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (J.W.)

So, I am watching the falcon and the winter soldier and Johnny boy just killed the guy. My question, was it the super soldier serum that made him so angry? I get it, his friend died, and he there was a bunch already going on with walker when he took the serum. Was Lamar right? Did the serum really just bring out the real John?
