Off Gym Vibe, Reconsidering BJJ All Together

General Discussion

Greetings fellow Bjj practitioners...so a quick background, and I'll try and be brief: I trained in my 20's at a Charles Gracie Gym in California and instantly bonded with many of the people I trained with there...looked forward to training as much as possible, at minimum 2x a week. I was into competing then, podiumed my first tournament as a white belt and then took a long break for my career after being awarded my blue after 2 years. My career working on merchant ships has kept me away from being able to train consistently at all.

Since I've re joined the local gym. The guy is a bit ego testicular (who isn't as a black belt?) But has always rubbed me the wrong way. Tonight we had a conversation that I felt was completely unprofessional and it was repeated out loud so everyone could hear, and then his clique laughed and guffawed at anytbing he said (felt they would have anyways). I'm much more mature now, so it didn't get to me, but what was said makes me wonder if I even want to train anymore, why waste the time? Let me elaborate how it went:

I asked him if he trained any basic disarms of weapons, for self defense, mainly guns or knives. He told me that he wouldn't do anything of that sort and wouldn't waste my money and that's better just training at the range bc "if he pulls his gun on me I'm dead". "Let them take it all and give up" basically. He asked if I had kids, and I told him "yes of course...I told you that when I signed up" and I clearly remember stating I wanted them in when they were of age. I could give him a pqss forgetting with lots of students, but I feel he was trying to "laugh" me out of the gym. I didnt care, just left and didnt look back, but it felt immature and ublnprofessional from a gym owner perspective. Now I'm reconsidering. If I don't want to compete or do "sport" jiu jitsu, why waste my time and money and just work out instead and always keep up on my fire arms and keep them ready with my concealed carry?

After all, Leandro Lo was one of the best, and he was quickly ended with a bullet to the head. This goes thru my mind.

Wanted all your thoughts and if this is an outlier.

Also another flag to me was a minimum 1 yr contract prior to mo to mo here.

Please weigh in 🤙 Oss!
