CREATING MY FIRST SHORT FILM, AND I NEED GEAR SUGGESTIONS (and your help)
Hey everyone,
My name’s Gianni, and I’m a writer/actor making my first real short film, called afterparty — it’s a story about, A stoic birthday boy, A wild card of a best friend, A stoned pizza guy, and one dead body.
I’ve been dreaming about doing this for years — but now that I’m finally doing it, I’m overwhelmed by the technical side of things. I could really use some guidance on gear, especially on a limited budget. Here’s what I need help with:
What I’m looking for:
- Camera + lens suggestions (low-budget but cinematic feel, think moody, dark comedy tone)
- Sound gear (I know bad audio ruins everything, what’s essential for small sets?)
- Lighting tips for indoor/night scenes (DIY or budget options welcome)
- Any gear you wish someone had told you to get when you started
I’ve also launched an Indiegogo to help fund the project. I hate asking, but I’ve reached the point where I can’t move forward alone. If you’ve ever been a broke filmmaker with a vision, you probably get it. Even $5 helps — and sharing the campaign would mean the world to me.

Thank you for any advice, support, or encouragement. I’m learning as I go, and I’m doing this because I believe in it, and I'm doing anything to achieve it. If you're also creating something, feel free to drop your work too. Let’s support each other.
