He (19M) says he mentally needs a break from the relationship but not me (19M). Does it seem like he wants this to really work out, or is this not a good thing?

For context, me and him live together. We have been together for about a year. And we have practically live together most of that time. We are both good at taking our own spaces, I feel like I am better with taking space for my own hobbies and interest. As well with downtime. Recently he had a manic episode, and before then he got pretty depressed. He stopped taking his own space as much, and he stopped using his outlets that were helping him. He stopped taking his medication regularly, he stopped, giving himself enough time to decompress.. it all got pretty bad, which resulted in him having super depressive and manic episodes. During one of those a little bit less than a month ago, he thought that it would be best if we broke up due to him, struggling with a lot of mental problems. Such as his mind, overthinking, getting paranoid, and running. And as well with his impulsive thoughts in his fear of not being able to control them. Now, fast forward to about two weeks later, he still acts like we are together, he still tells me he loves me. He does things for me like cook me food, buy me things, help me out around the house, help me out financially. He is also here, emotionally, just not to the extent that he was before. The only thing that really bothers me is that he acts like this unless it’s around his workplace. He works over at Home Depot, and the people that work there are super unprofessional, and he has been harassed before. It makes me feel shitty because I feel like he doesn’t defend my name as much as he could. He had a mental breakdown at work a few weeks ago and they asked him what was wrong and he expressed that he was having a really hard time mentally and then with the break up that he initiated it had been hard. Someone that he thought he could trust talking to got around with the word and spread it to everybody. Now there are girls at work that has been trying to hit him up, they have slept with most of the workplace by the way. And they also have significant others. These people are disrespectful to other people’s emotions and boundaries.. one of them she tried to call us super toxic because he still wants to be with me, and I still want to be with him. And bc he feels like working things out together. Mind you he was not having this conversation with her, she just chimed in on him talking to one of his buddies at work. she also later tried to coerce him into having sex with her. Mind you she has a boyfriend and she is also using him for money…. She said this right in front of my partner’s manager, and he felt like he couldn’t really say anything to her. Idk this whole situation makes me feel disgusted seeing those kinds of people around and him also not saying anything! He’s comfortable with me being around at his work, he even comes to see me on my breaks (I work across the street.) he’s pretty open with having me around. He also isn’t going out to look for another relationship, or rebound, or sex. He has expressed to me that he feels like that is unhealthy and unnecessary because he is uncomfortable with having sex with a stranger practically. He has to trust the other individual enough in order to be with them. In his opinion, he doesn’t like people that sleep around, or cheat on their partners, or people that are not serious. And to him that is the reason why he would have sex with only me.. he still has me as his wallpaper, contact names have not changed. He seems invested in me in certain ways. It’s hard for me to know what to do because he is struggling with mental illness, and I know that that is hard personally. Although I cannot let myself get hurt. He says that he does not plan on sleeping with anybody else or “moving on,” I just worry about what could happen. All of the what ifs..
