What makes pokemon games so addicting?

Is it cute creatures or story? Maybe turn based combat or collecting best stat pokemon and shinies? Or maybe it is competition you can have with your pokemon?

For me personally, I liked the most collecting best stat pokemon, so I could compete in battles. My favorite and first pokemon game was "pokemon platinum". Whole gameplay and game theme was a great experience.
