I told my sister after over 10 years
When I was really young, like under 10 years old, something happened between me and my adult brother.
I was the one who touched him. I don’t want to lie and say I didn’t know anything. At the time, I thought I knew what I was doing. I was curious. I might have seen things online. I might have even wanted it in some way. That part makes me feel disgusting.
But here’s what I know now: I was still a kid. He was much older. An adult. And he let it happen. He didn’t stop me. He laughed. He stayed in the bed and did nothing. He knew better. He could’ve protected me. He didn’t.
I carried this for years thinking it was my fault. That I was sick. That I ruined something. But I was a child trying to act out something I didn’t truly understand and the one who should’ve stopped it just let it happen.
I finally told my sister recently. At first, she seemed like she cared. But then she started saying stuff like:
“You were probably just hormonal.” “He was sick too.” “Stuff like this happens, it doesn’t have to be that serious.” “Maybe you should think of him as a man in your life, not a brother.” “You started it though.”
Now I feel even worse than before. I told her because I wanted to feel safe — emotionally, mentally. But instead she made me feel like I was some confused, dirty little kid who ruined a man’s life. Even though he was the adult. Even though I was the one carrying all the shame for years.
I blocked her. I told her I didn’t want to walk away, but I had to. Because I realized she wasn’t protecting me. she was protecting the story she needed to believe.
Now I’m scared she’ll tell my family. That they’ll talk about it behind my back. That they’ll see me as the problem. Even though deep down I know I wasn’t.
I was a child. He wasn’t. That should’ve been enough.
