"Leaving vs. Staying—Is This My Biggest Mistake or My Best Decision?"
I just turned 18 and graduated from HS and am now at that point in my life of wanting to change things up. For some context I grew up in a pretty strict household (the same/similar routine was done every day) and also it was very restricting. The routine and the strict restricting was fine but after a certain age I feel as though I should have more "freedom" if you will. I won't get into too much detail. My parents are amazing parents. They always sacrificed to make me and my bro happy. And I know they love me with all their hearts. With that said I have always had somewhat of a strained relationship with them all. Any ways so as a graduation gift to myself I flew myself out to Nevada to spend time with my family (Grandparents, Unkels, Aunts, Etc). It was fantastic. I was able to not only see what vacation time looked like but also got to see what an average day would like in their households. Before this trip I was already trying to figure out ways to shake things up, try to move into my own place in my home state or just constantly be driving from my home state to Nevada. Now anyways while in Nevada my Great Aunt brought up a very interesting proposal. What if I moved out there for a few months. It gives me a chance to help out with my grandparents but also find my self and who I want to be without my parents influence if that makes since. Now for some context I with my parents and bro moved to a state far from Neveda for my parents work about ten years ago. We really didn't see any of our family that is in Nevada because we were all just so far from each other. So, this was the second time I was able to spend a ton of time with them in the past ten or so years. I now am thinking of moving out their, getting an online job, helping out with my grandparents and just switching it up. Now there are some things to put into consideration. I just moved back to my home state almost five months ago, I have only had my job for three, I just got into karate is loving it. I would not move to Vegas but again my family who i have not seen in forever is out there. I know this move would strain my relationships with my parents even more, but I feel as though this could be a good thing for myself disscovery. I would aslo be there for no longer then a year as I plan on going to my home state university and join the Army R.O.T.C program. This would just give me a chance to go outside my comfort zone and do something different. My mother did this when she tuned 18 and she told me a few years ago she loved it. I am just not sure what to do at this point.
Moving to Vegas could mean:
- A chance to break out of routine – I have lived in a structured household for years, and stepping into a new environment could give me the freedom to explore who I am outside of those restrictions.
- Reconnecting with family – After ten years of distance, this could be a special time to build those relationships stronger and closer.
- Helping your grandparents – Supporting them while they navigate health challenges would be incredibly meaningful to me.
- A short-term adventure – Since I am planning on going to university and joining ROTC, this wouldn’t be forever. It would only be temporary way to experience something new before settling into college.
Staying in my Home State:
- Just started building a life here – I just moved back only five months ago and just got into karate, and I just got an amazing job three months ago.
- Relationship with parents – Moving now might create more strain, which could make future transitions harder. But maybe this could bring us together in some way. My brother is also like... I am very protective of him, and he is starting middle school when I am thinking I would move out.
- Safety & routine – My home state is familiar; with lower crime and safer driving conditions I know my anxiety would be less if I stayed.
I am just really torn and don't know what to do. I love my parents so much and want to make them happy and proud but am craving a new adventure in life.
