I'm sick and tired of street sexual harassment
Hi everyone!I hope you're all right.
Well, i'm a 21-year-old woman from a cold city in Colombia. I grew up in a lower-class neighborhood and now live in a middle-class neighborhood.
What's the problem? The street sexual harassment i have been suffered and how those memories generate fear, anger, and annoyance to me.
It's a terrible and global issue, but i feel very alone and isolated in this.
Basically, i started being harassed when i was barely 12 years old, until last year when I was 20.
MY WHOLE LIFE, MY WHOLE FUCKING LIFE, I'VE WORN A LOT OF CLOTHES (BAGGY, LONG, OVERSIZED, "MODEST," AND "DECENT"). I'm always fully covered, even at my house.
I dont wear makeup neither.
I remember being harassed, in total, 18 times. 18...
16 were street harassment, and the other 2 were by a doctor who touched me inappropriately in front of my mother, and another by a known man of my grandmother at a family meeting.
In 17 of these 18 harassment situations, i was accompanied, i was with someone, i was mainly with my mother, my grandmother, and my aunt. Once, it also happened when i was with my father!
I've suffered a lot because of this. I cried a lot remembering it all lately.
As a woman, i've done everything possible (everything) to avoid the harassment.
I remember most of the scenarios very well...
On the vast majority of those occasions, i was wearing what i already mentioned, specifically several layers of clothing. For example: once, i was walking down the street with my mom, and a disgusting old man walked by and said something awkward to me (or to us?) that i can't even remember, i was wearing: a blue plaid shirt, a denim shirt, a parka jacket over it all, a scarf, and underneath... baggy jeans (literally,i looked like an "onion") from wearing so many clothes.
Last year, we went with my grandfather's family to a little town with a hot weather. When we arrived, i was wearing a long sleeved shirt and jeans, but i was walking with my mom and a guy yelled at us, "Goodbye, my loves!" WTF?
Only once, i was harassed at a mall, and i was wearing short shorts.
There are things that really affect me:
-
How my family allowed the harassment by not defending me when it happened right in front of their eyes?
-
How my family, to this day, invalidates these situations, calling me "exaggerated" or "paranoid."
-
How my family still grudgingly says, "The harassment is because of the clothes" when they see cases of harassment in front of other women on the news...
I'd like to tell my family: "Really, you idiots? They harassed me in front of you all while i was dressed like a fucking nun, and you keep saying this stupid things? Please, stop victim blaming, for the hell of it. (Fun fact: I was raised by a violent single mother, my father "partially abandoned" me, and I've suffered from domestic violence my entire life.)
I'm very dissapointed, of this fucking world.
Also, i can't believed how the women (and men) in my family are SO INVALIDATING and SEXIST. Every time i try to talk to any of them about how vulnerable i feel, about the bad memories, or about how they should have defended me, they insult me, as i've already said (even my gay cousin, who loves me, has told me im "overreacting" for this situation).
Another thing that infuriates me is that, both in real life and online, there are still people who blame our clothes, knowing that there are women like me who have always worn a lot of clothes, and knowing that sick men can even assault non-human and dead beings... SCARY
Why did I say I feel lonely at the beginning? Because i don't have any friends or a boyfriend, all because fear...
And because i've read comments from girls who say they've stopped being harassed by:
- Wearing more modest clothing
- Going out with someone else. I've always used these protective measures: "Going out fully clothed and going out with someone else" among others like not drinking alcohol, but none of them worked...
Am I the only woman who has gone through all this "unprovoked"???
To conclude, i would like two things:
-
KNOW, just know, why i've suffered so much harassment even though i'm "modest and decent", going out with someone else, during the day, on safe streets, etc
-
Advices, so this doesn't affect me (i know it's inevitable unless men stop harassing, like fuckin animales, but I just need some reassurance from other women).
P.S: Sorry for my imperfect english
