AT&T Blacklisted My Gifted Phone After 2 Years—No Investigation, No Warning
Location: Alaska Two years ago, my ex-partner gifted me a phone. I confirmed with him that it was mine to keep, and I activated it on my AT&T account. I’ve been using it without issues ever since.
However, immediately after our breakup, he reported the phone as stolen. AT&T then blacklisted the device and shut off my service without any prior notice or investigation. Despite having proof of long-term use and ownership, AT&T refused to assist, stating only the original purchaser could reverse the blacklist.
I was forced to purchase a new phone to stay connected. AT&T’s representatives provided conflicting information—first saying I could return the new device, then stating it was only eligible for an upgrade.
This experience has been incredibly frustrating. Has anyone else faced a similar situation? Any advice on how to proceed or escalate this matter further?
