Are H/MU trials necessary?
The MUA/hair team I hired for me and my 5 bridesmaids do excellent work, are rated highly on Zola, and have many accolades/magazine features, etc. I did extensive research into what kind of makeup I pictured on my wedding day, and my views aligned perfectly with theirs. Soft glam to enhance my natural features and a half updo blowout. Easy enough?? I had a call with the owner and felt so comfortable and confident in their style/techniques that I immediately paid the 20% deposit and signed a contract in order to secure our date. I was given a list of dates to schedule my trial at that time as well. Day-of bridal H/MU was $250 each, for a total of $500. Which obviously isn’t cheap, but it’s something I figured worth spending the money on for our big day. When it was time for my trial, I reached out to see how much it would be so I could move some money around. I combed through the contract from top to bottom at least 5 times before reaching out because I didn’t wanna look stupid-but there is absolutely nothing about H/MU trials or the cost of them (which some may assume was included in the final cost). But the owner very kindly told me the trial was ALSO $500… the day before my appointment. I felt horrible but I simply did not have that kind of money to drop on short notice so I had to cancel. And I haven’t rescheduled. Now, I didn’t expect it to be free. but I thought that the trial would maybe be half (?) of the cost for the real day? I still haven’t gotten back to him about rescheduling, because I’m not sure I really want/am able to pay $500 for a trial. I really do trust the artists to do what I’ve seen in photos of past work and what the owner of the company promised me. Have you opted out of a trial? Was your trial the same price as day-of hair/makeup? I’m getting married in about 100 days, and I don’t want to regret not doing a trial. I don’t think I will, but I’m interested in hearing some other experiences.
TLDR; My artist quoted me $500 for a hair and makeup trial (same cost as day-of H/MU) with no mention of the trial cost in my contract. I had to cancel because I couldn’t afford it and I haven’t rescheduled.
