Need help deciding upgrade from 1080p to 1440p or 4K monitor?

currently using 1080p monitor, i can choose between 1440p or 4K, my hardware can support it.

reason why i can't decide is because i'm worried the jump from 1080p to 4K is too much to get used to? most programs and things seem like they designed to fit 1080p. if using 4K, wouldn't everything look much smaller and you'd have too much free space on the screen?

just wondering your thoughts if 1440p is the sweet spot, or is 4K really that much better and worth it?
