What's with the media obsession with the Erin Patterson case?

I don't get it. Why is there such an insane level of media obsession with this particular case? I can't see that it's any different from any other criminal trial, so why on earth is every media outlet doing live, minute-by-minute coverage? The ABC, the Guardian, The Age, all the Murdoch press, everyone's doing the same thing.

Or is this some kind of ghoulish true-crime-podcast type thing with the media turning this tragic case into a publicity circus?
