Can someone explain the game’s history (new player)?

I bought the game around 2 weeks ago in the midst of the super earth invasion by the illuminate and had a blast defending democracy. Now that not much is happening, I’m wondering what did in the first year or so that I missed out on. What did you all do before the illuminate attacked super earth?
