Advice on taking extra gap year
Hey everyone, I’m heading into my senior year of undergrad and planning to take a gap year after applying to med school. I’m starting MCAT prep this October so I’m trying to get a good sense of where I stand and what I can still improve.
Right now, I’ve got around 1,100 clinical hours working as an MA, about 600 hours of research, and I’m aiming to hit 300 volunteer hours across a few different activities before I graduate. I’ve also racked up roughly 1,000 leadership hours through being an RA. I’ve done three poster presentations and am hoping to get a publication out soon.
My GPA is currently a 3.86 (my sGPA is a bit higher), and I know my MCAT score will play a big role especially since I’m aiming for a T20 or T30 school. I’m also thinking of taking two gap years instead of one mostly so I can get a full year of research in before applying. That said, with MCAT prep taking up a lot of time during senior year, I’m not sure how realistic it’ll be to stay involved in research at a meaningful level. I would love any advice on how to make my app stronger and whether two gap years seem worth it or if I’d be fine applying after just one.
