Have you ever seen a story with some weird/over the top ideas you couldn't help but like, yet become disappointed when you realized the execution is lacking?
Stories with dragons of course.
If you struggle to grasp what I mean by that, then I give these examples of mine:
- Haven't seen a Dragonheart movie since long ago, but from what I remember of the series, the lore got quite a few... additions. So dragons are mean to guide humanity and come from the stars where they can choose to incarnate in a meteor that falls on Earth.
Now that's quite out there, but I just love it, except the series doesn't do these ideas justice in my eyes, with the settings staying not much magical overall. I mean, the humans are still in middle age, and the plans of the bad guys are not over the top like the dragon lore itself, which is a shame.
Griffin (Grifith?) in the second movie is this evil dragon that viewed humanity as lesser beings, the pact as a joke and got punished by his kin, made a good villain on paper. But he under exploited with his role as some generic dark lord (no, you won't hear him say much about dragon kind and his ambitions that could make him a more interesting character) that got defeated in the same movie he appeared, by children.
- The wings of fire fanfic "Dragon change", it got more and more epic and deviated from canon the more it went on, adding gods and new lore to a ridiculous point (no, it doesn't get any less ridiculous at any point, it always escalates). Yet it shows that the author wrote the story along the way, but more than that, the story didn't get nearly enough content to properly bring all its ideas.
Also the more you approach the end, the more the fic is rushed, to the point an entire faction and the main villain are little more than generic, faceless evil being led by an overpowered dark lord, there is also an afterlife and the mention of other worlds, the possibility of spreading dragonking to the stars, but it's all glossed over.
Overpowered? Sorry, I meant OVERPOWERED, the BBEG becomes so powerful in the end that, as all hopes seem lost, even with all the gods fighting together with the main cast, a deus ex machina comes to save the day. Of course, there may be another one followed by a happy ending that forces every problematic plot point and drama to cease so everyone can smile and celebrate the victory, all to wrap a story the author might be tired of writing.
So yeah, if you were there more for the character going through crazy adventures and their relationships, you also will be disappointed in the end.
But enough about me, what are your stories with ideas of such nature that ended up disappointing you?
