AITA for being honest to an exhausting friend
Quite a long read. Sorry if it’s boring. But I need help. I recently moved abroad and made a Uni friend from my home country. She was a dream come true, too good to be true kinda friend. Always had my back, extremely nice to like everyone and sometimes went out of the way to help people. I'm not like her, l'm more reserved, I take things slow in friendships and to be precise: it was more like a golden retriever-black cat friendship. Things went well until one day, she fought with her cousin with whom she was staying. It was a nasty fight involving a dude so basically her cousin's family kinda shut her out. She has weird attachment issues with her cousin sis. Her immediate family suggested she move out. Naturally, she stayed with me for a couple of months. Something really changed in this period. She was definitely very caring, sweet and offered to always help and share my load. She was the bestest friend anyone could ask. I was sharing the house with my boyfriend and another friend and she joined us. She was in my personal space a lot but I didn't mind it much. But my boyfriend wanted to live independently with me cuz this friend will ALWAYS be in our space. Kinda hard to avoid. So when I decided to shift, she started acting shady. Started blaming my bf for everything, threw tantrums and blackmailed emotionally saying “I was there for you, now what will I tell my parents”... all that. After convincing I somehow moved.
Later introduced an old friend(male) to her, just a part of the friend group. Things got messy as fk here. She crushed on him so hard that he was icked out. (His words) She never confessed to me about liking him. She will pull something whenever he visited me and my bf( he is actually my bf’s friend) The dude was also sketchy, cuz he will talk shit about her but lead her on in private. I basically told them both to shut up and just not be with each other if yall can’t. It was a messy situation ship. It was so so tiring and exhausting as l'll be put in a mediator position where, basically, both of them will bitch about each other. And one fine day, decided to start dating. Now, I naturally didn't wanna intrude much. But for some reason she keeps asking me why I don't care. She talks a lot about her feelings, over shares her story, trauma and current stress although we are all literally in the same boat financially. I'm just not wired like that. She dumps everything on me, assumed that I am in the place of her cousin (weird), always blames my bf for only choosing me ( weird) and bitches about most people and things in her life. It's exhausting to be her friend. And when I told her one fine day (I was rude, pretty straightforward to her face) that this is how I feel. Suddenly she started victimising herself. She always encourages me to bring up if something is wrong, but when I did, it was a problem and I was a bad friend. Right after this fight, she texted MY ex friend (not in great terms) and made plans to hang out with her. That was my last straw. I'm truly hurt.
Now am I the asshole?
