Pondering ten directions (ਦਹ ਦਿਸ) and Siddhi (ਅਠਾਰਹ ਸਿਧੀ) in context of dimensions
Gurbani talks about two concepts a lot in context of emphasizing the importance of Naam: ten directions and eighteen Sidhis. The point usually is there is no home (not only in terms of space, but time as well) but naam no matter if one travels in ten directions or has access to eighteen Sidhis.
Before I dive into my pondering, I do want to acknowledge that this pondering could be deemed as projecting modern science onto religious concepts. On the other hand, my personal realization is that western science has generally ignored eastern science since they became more dominant in the world. One example I noticed recently is the fodmap foods. Our older traditions already assigned specific categories to foods called taseers (persion word meaning effect): hot or cold. This is further divided into: liquid and dry. So, in total four categories and they help understand how they impact your gut. For example, hot (not in terms of temperature but effect) foods generally reduce air in the body whereas cold foods will increase it. For example, rice has a cold effect and will increase air in the body. Cold foods generally increase inflammation in the body and lead to pain whereas hot food have the opposite effect. Hot foods make your pee sting whereas colds have the opposite effect. I digress. My point is that don't ignore eastern sciences just because conmen use that knowledge to control people by making up stories. Make it part of your imagination too.
Going back to the pondering. I was always confused about the ten directions (ਦਹ ਦਿਸ) as I did not buy the concept of counting four diagonal directions since you could make the argument that up and down should have diagonal directions too. I was just watching YouTube videos about dimensions (i.e. 2D, 3D, 4D, etc.). While learning this, I wondered if our ancestors may have been these directions in a similar manner as the modern science does in terms of dimensions.
It seemed more plausible that it could have been because these other dimensions explain the concepts of eighteen sidhis. For your knowledge, these are the eighteen of them per Mahankosh:
reduce your size
inflate your size
become heavier
become lighter
get desired things
Read others' minds
Convince others to follow your desires
Control others
Never being Hungary
Listen faraway noises
Watch faraway views
Travel at the speed of mind
Become attractive
Go inside other's body
Control your death (i.e. die when you want)
Play (or have sex?) with gods
Manifestation of what you can imagine
No limitations on where you can travel
A being that can control 4th dimension (i.e. time) can go back and forth in time. They are not prisoner of time like we are. For them, going back in time and forward is not hard. A being with control of 5th dimension would be able to see all timelines that there can be. They would be able to go into your past and possible futures and control you as they will know some of the timelines that they would be able to predict.
I'm not saying I have come across a person who possesses these. I don't believe any of the powers religious folks (not just in Sikhi, but all religions) talk about as they don't matter in what our true target is. Gurbani states that there is no home but Naam. That's where you need to belong and no being with controls of higher dimensions will be able to control you. On the other hand, having the power to travel in higher dimensions wouldn't make you reach your home. So, you just need to situate in your place (space or time) through naam. But, still I wonder what these words meant to our ancestors...
