The Overgrown Path

The Overgrown Path By Jordan Lowe

I used to walk a road

One oh so familiar

One that never changed

The same

Day in and day out

The same today

The same yesterday

The same tomorrow

Dark, depressing

Wet, cold, and bleak

Lonely and isolated

A place

Nobody wanted to be

Not even me

One day

As I walked that same path

Feeling the same way

Ready to give up

I heard a voice

One I didn’t recognize

But yet seemed so familiar

He spoke to me like an old friend

Like he knew me

And he pointed me to a path

One not walked by many

An overgrown path

Hidden in the brush

Behind the trees

He told me

What you looking for

Is through the brush

Just walk through

As I walked through the trees

There was a glorious light

Shining through the trees

In a beautiful tapestry of green and yellow I came across a gate

the voice urged me to go through

The gate was old

Like time had forgotten about it

Vines and branches had overtaken it

And moss covered the entire structure

There was an other worldly beauty to the whole thing

Like something written in a fantasy

I noticed a sign hidden in the moss and vines

As I uncovered it I noticed these words

“The pathway to righteousness”

I realized I knew this voice

It was one I had rejected

And ignored many times

It was the voice of God

It was the same God that died for me

There was more words below the others

“Repentance is the key to open the gate”

As I repented the gate slowly opened

And as I walked through

A weight was lifted

I never went back to that old path

I have happily left all the darkness

All the pain

All the cold rain

All the depression

And all the hopeless days

The days I never thought would change

I have left it all behind me

And the overgrown path

Only gets more and more beautiful

I have washed in a river of living water

And been filled with a spirit

The same spirit that called me to this path

And have found never ending happiness

So if that voice ever calls you

Listen to it

And let it lead you

Down that overgrown path
