4 Year Old Damaged Our New TV - What Are My Options?
We bought a Sony X90L 85" TV from Costco (paid $3,000 CAD) back in mid February, so about 4 months ago. It was a big purchase for us based on our household income and was something we saved for.
Last weekend, we hosted my son’s 4th birthday party. At one point, he and his friends were playing in the basement where the TV is. I didn’t see what happened, but afterward, I noticed the screen was damaged. According to my son, his friend was responsible, but I don't want to make a big issue out of it with the other parents. Adding a photo in the comments to show the damage.
Replacing it with a similar-quality TV just isn’t financially possible for us right now, and I’m trying to figure out my options:
- Credit card purchase protection: I checked with my card provider, but their protection only applies within 90 days. Unfortunately I’m just past that.
- Costco return: Their return window for TVs is also 90 days. I highly doubt they’d take a damaged unit back anyway.
- Repair: I’ll get a quote, but it looks like repairs for large-screen TVs are often close to the cost of a new one.
- (Unethical option): Could I buy the same model again from Costco, then return the damaged one in the new box or use that new purchase to trigger credit card protection? I’m not seriously planning on doing this, but wondering what others think about that kind of thing.
Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Any advice or other options I haven’t considered? Thanks in advance for any help.
