Doctor's offices and banks need to stop calling you to verify your personal information

I got denied from a bank account application because they called me to verify my personal information, and I told them that I would have to call them back since I only give out my personal information over a phone call if I was the one who initiated the call. Even though I believed that the phone call was legitimate, knowing how scammers can spoof their numbers to look like it's coming from anyone, this is generally a good policy to have.

Now, for whatever reason, my doctor's office has started calling before appointments to verify information (even though they already have you do it online), and this sets a dangerous model where people will think that this is a normal and safe expectation and become more vulnerable to scammers who will take advantage of the situation. These institutions always make you verify your identity in multiple ways when you call them, but there isn't really any way for you to verify their identity when they call you. It's always better to be on the safe side with these kinds of things.

I feel like I'm the only one who was taught to only give out your personal info if you initiated the phone call. It's irresponsible for these institutions to encourage you to trust incoming phone calls that can easily have their caller ID spoofed.
