Looking for a solid 5K training plan – something more advanced than Polar Flow
Hi all,
I’m 36 and have been running consistently for about 10 years. For the past 5 seasons, my routine has been almost identical: start running easy in the spring, then jump into a 12-week Polar Flow plan (usually for 10K) and follow it through. To be fair, it worked well for a while – each year I felt stronger, my fitness improved, and I was happy with the results.
But now I feel like I’ve hit a ceiling. Every season I end up running my fastest 5K somewhere around 20:00–20:30, and I just can’t seem to break past that.
I like the Polar plans, but they’re starting to feel too easy and a bit repetitive. I miss more intense sessions – longer intervals, more speed-focused work, something with a bit more edge. I’m looking for a more varied, slightly tougher plan that’s still realistic for an amateur with decent mileage under his belt.
I’ve looked into TrainingPeaks, but I’ve heard syncing plans can be a pain. I’ve also been toying with the idea of working with a coach – not at a pro level, just someone who could help push me out of this plateau.
Has anyone been in a similar spot? Any plans, platforms, or coaching services you’d recommend?
