The city buzzed with life as rain drizzled against the pavement, neon lights reflecting in the puddles like scattered stars. Ethan pulled his hoodie tighter around himself, the damp chill creeping under his clothes. He hadn’t planned on staying out this late, but work had dragged on, and now he was stuck waiting for the last bus home.

That’s when he saw him—the guy from the café on 7th Street. Ethan had noticed him before, sitting by the window with a book in one hand and a cappuccino in the other, always looking lost in thought. Tonight, though, the guy was leaning against the bus stop, scrolling through his phone, his dark curls damp from the rain.

Ethan hesitated before stepping closer, shoving his hands into his pockets. “Hey… do you, uh, always take the late bus?” The words left his mouth before he could second-guess them.
