Sudden excessive sleeping
Hi everyone!
Over the last week my dad as suddenly taken a turn to sleeping majority of the day. He slept in until nearly 10am today and he religiously is a 4-6am riser.
He’s also been having a hard time keeping eyes open and generally staying awake all day. He says he just feels tired. He’s snoring on his chair, he came out of the room, bathroomed and got dressed. We took his vitals (all normal) got him his pills n water and he’s been wiped out since. I’ve woken him up to eat breakfast and drink some water. It’s 1pm now and he’s pretty much dozed all day.
This started earlier in the last week.
Diagnosed in Feb. He’s had brain surgery, chemo and radiation, and another round of chemo. The recent last round of chemo really wiped him out and he stopped it almost 2 weeks ago and we’re still seeing a rash from it. He also started optune but shortly had to stop after due to an allergic reaction so he was on lots of allergy meds for a few days but he hasn’t had them since all of the sleeping started.
What do you guys think? I know as cancer progresses and end of life starts to become the center process, you’ll typically see a LOT of sleep and decreased eating/ drinking / urine output etc. My mom noted that he hasn’t peed in the middle of the night a couple times this week which is also a major change for him.
He just had his MRI since first rounds of everything and surgery and they only noticed some minor swelling around the original area that they couldn’t get with surgery. They said it’s consistent with recent medications and chemo/radiation and didn’t seem concerned. We noted his excessive sleeping patterns starting and the doctor didn’t really remark on it and circled back on how the treatments and everything will take time to get strength back from. But he had more energy while on chemo/radiation in April than when I’m sitting here watching him now on coasting mode until next round of chemo!
Ugh. My mind keeps coming back to what I think is the reality but I’m hoping not. Has anyone had this and had their loved one bounce back?
