did G5 ever explained why canterlot and ponyville got abandonned?

I wonder did they do that during the show or the comics, cloudslale I can get because pegasi can't fly or float on cloud (tho they should've kept tab on the town itself), but they coudl've kept canterlot and ponyville even i fthe species were separated I think.
