How was Edward Gibbon perceived outside of the English speaking worlds with respect to the history of Rome?

I am currently reading volume one from the great book series made by Britannica in the 1950s, but I was wondering, I guess in some sense whether he has a number of historical errors or whether his explanation for the fall of the Roman Empire is correct, he is influential in English speaking countries, but what do people think about him on the continent namely in France, Italy, Germany, Spain? That is to say are there Italian authors who are considered to be the classic author for Roman history?
