Question About Legal Drone Flight Near Multnomah Falls Using ROW

Rules / Regulations

Hey folks — I’m a recreational drone pilot working toward my Part 107 and doing my best to stay on the right side of the rules while capturing some beautiful Oregon spots.

I know that drones are prohibited from launching or landing within the developed recreation site at Multnomah Falls, per the USFS Forest Order. Totally get it — very popular area, high foot traffic, and environmental sensitivity.

That said, I’m curious if anyone here has successfully flown near Multnomah Falls by launching from a legal public right-of-way (ROW) — like a roadside turnout outside the actual site boundary, such as on the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Assuming I: • Launch from outside the restricted area • Don’t fly over crowds or the developed site itself • Maintain VLOS and fly under 400ft • Avoid wilderness boundaries (like Hatfield)

…does that meet the legal and practical standards from your experience?

Not looking to push boundaries here, just trying to find a way to safely and legally capture the falls from a respectful distance, without disturbing anyone or violating regulations.

Anyone done this before, or have location suggestions for good ROW launch spots nearby?

Thanks in advance! 🙏
