The Subtext of Hila’s Post
Hila Klein’s recent IG post, like much liberal Zionist discourse, reflects a worldview steeped in imperial logic. At its core is a familiar bad faith: the presumption that Iran is simply irrational, backwards, and hostile—rather than a nation reacting to decades of Western aggression, regime meddling, and regional destabilization.
This mindset isn’t exclusive to any one group. It’s shared by neoconservatives, liberal hawks, and Christian Zionists alike. They view global politics as a clash between the civilized and the savage. Once a group is deemed savage—be it the Viet Cong, Iraqis, or Palestinians—they are stripped of context, grievance, and humanity.
Zionism, particularly in its modern liberal guise, often frames concern for human rights (e.g., Iranian women) as a Trojan horse for regime change and eventual regional normalization with Israel—without Israel making a single concession. It’s not solidarity; it’s opportunism.
If Hila truly cared about the conditions of people in Iran, she’d also acknowledge the American-backed 1953 coup, the blowback of the 1979 revolution, and the suffocating sanctions that have devastated ordinary Iranians. But like many Zionists, it’s easier to moralize about the “barbaric East” than to confront the structural violence of her own side: the occupation, the siege of Gaza, the apartheid regime Palestinians live under.
Until that hypocrisy is acknowledged, these gestures toward human rights are just that—gestures. Underneath it all is a hateful, racist ideology that prevents Palestinians from being free. If only Hila cared to unlearn what she was taught growing up and sought out different perspectives.
