Can vehicle registration and driver license under different state in VA?

Hi everyone!

I was hoping to get some advice on title/registration and license. I’m planning to switch my car registration and plate from my home state to VA since it’s due for smog check this year and I won’t be able to get it back to my home state for the check. I’m a full time student and DMV website said out-of-state student can keep their home state registration and license. But since I need to switch my car registration to VA, I was wondering if I can still keep my driver license from my home state or I’ll have to make the switch too. I tried googling but there’s no definite answer, so just wondering if anyone here will know. Tysm!
