Expats: Where do you draw the line, morally, in regard to dictators (or do you)?

So I was mulling over taking a job in Vietnam and I think it would be morally acceptable because even though it's a one-party system, the people are not starving and I have traveled to Vietnam and the people, generally, seem to be happy. I would say it's the same for China. I am OK with one-party systems even though I am from a democracy (if you can call the USA a democracy :P)

I have avoided Thailand because a military junta still rules the country and I would consider a place like Cambodia totally out of bounds morally due to its long-standing dictatorship which has been passed on to a child. Indeed, I discovered this story about an expat who refuses to teach in Cambodia because the political climate is so problematic there: Mobius: The Journal of Social Change

So I guess I would eliminate Myanmar/Burma as well (on a personal level). In fact Myanmar and Cambodia have become famous for the illegal 'scam factories' where people are trafficked into becoming internet scammers. My attitude is that if a government allows that, I, myself, am just not safe.

Now Cambodia and Thailand are going to fight a war over ancient sacred monuments (it will be the junta rallying the people patriotically around itself vs. the dictator rallying the poor people of Cambodia around himself).

So let me ask you - do you consider the politics of a country before you go to teach there? Are there place you look at and say, "No, this dictator has kept the people too poor...No, this junta has destroyed democracy...etc.?"
