Finances/how do you afford to foster?
Just that, really.
I'm single, female, in my mid-20s and I've been thinking about foster care for many years. But I don't understand how (if?) it's possible unless you have one working partner providing financially, and one staying at home providing care.
I live in Australia where there is a stipend for foster carers, but I would want this to go directly to the child as much as possible. I have heard of some people setting up a savings account for the stipend money to gift when the child turns 18, and I would love to be able to do this. Is this naïve?
I currently do some extremely flexible remote/freelance work, which I am planning on expanding in the future so it covers more of my bills, and I'd be open to working remotely if it's possible so I can be at home more often.
I don't know what the usual financial set up is, and I'd be really interested to hear from anyone (especially people in Aus) about how this works for your family. Thank you!
Note: This is something I'm considering in 5-10 years, not right now. This would also be after purchasing a house, so expenses would include mortgage repayments. I'm thinking about it now so I can potentially set myself up to be in a good position to provide care :)
ETA: How do you teach your kids about finances, especially if they might not be staying with you? If it's not possible to offer a savings account, is it normal to give kids pocket money from the carers allowance and maybe encourage them to set up a bank account/teach them about saving and finances?
