Navigating Faith, Family, and Love: I Chose religion but lost her
Hi everyone, I’ve been a silent reader and one time poster here for a while, but I felt like I needed to share my story partly to find some peace, and partly to hear from others who may have been through something similar.
I’m a 23year-old Muslim from a Pakistani background, born and raised in Australia. I’m not a perfect Muslim and I’m still discovering what Islam means to me personally, outside of what I was raised with. But over the past year, especially through some of the hardest emotional challenges of my life, I’ve started to feel more connected to my faith. Not out of fear or pressure but out of love, curiosity, and spiritual clarity and i realise what it means to me as an individual
And that journey came with loss.
I recently ended a relationship with someone I loved very, very deeply. We were together for nearly 6 months, and she was everything to me kind, warm, accepting, and supportive, my bff and my home She came from a very different background white Australian, raised by five parents (3 of whom are gay), all of whom she sees as family. She’s proud of them, and they’re a big part of her identity. I never judged her for that I loved her, I still do and loved her family as well but our worlds didn’t align.
Her views on religion were neutral to negative she didn’t hate mine, but she didn’t want it in the home. She once said she didn’t want “religion in her house.” Because she grew up resenting it She was open to conversations, and she listened but I could tell that my growing connection to Islam was something she didn’t fully understand or see herself embracing in the long term because it scared her and terrified her
Over time, I realised that while she loved me for me, she didn’t fully connect with the cultural and spiritual parts of me that I now know I want to build my life around. I want my future kids to be Muslim or at least have a home open to understandings of it maybe not in the same way its shoved down peoples throat and I want Islam to be part of my home. I want to grow spiritually, and I don’t want to bury that for the sake of someone else even someone I love.
On her side, she wanted full acceptance of her family not just tolerance which is maybe what my parents could offer if that. But I knew in my heart that my mum (who’s a conservative Muslim woman) could only offer tolerance, not full embrace. And that hurt her. Understandably so. But I also couldn’t force my family to become something they’re not. And I couldn’t abandon them either.
We both cried. A lot. There was no fight. No betrayal. Just heartbreak. Because we were real. And still, we couldn’t make it work.
Now I feel broken. I’ve cried more in the past few days than I have in years. I miss her. I miss our routine. The way she saw me like no one else ever did. The softness of just being next to her. It feels like my chest is hollow. Like the world is still moving and I’m stuck.
I’ve even had these moments of anger and desperation feeling like maybe God is cruel for putting us in each other’s lives just to tear us apart. But deep down I know that’s not true. I know God isn’t cruel He’s just showing me who I am, and what I need to walk toward, even if it costs me something beautiful. I am still discovering myself but i can’t help but think love should be enough or maybe we will find our way back together even though i know we may not
I guess what I want to ask is: • Has anyone else here had to choose between love and faith? • Can interfaith relationships truly work when future goals like raising kids?
